Savina Chai: Grit and grace
Many influencers are attractive models, but few are true role models.
Young and accomplished, Savina Chai’s elegant style belies her steely grit and steadfast discipline. Having worn many hats — fashion designer, style influencer and business consultant, Savina started her first business, fashion label Eight Slate, when she was fresh out of Temasek Polytechnic at just 19.
Savina’s inspiring journey and impeccable dress sense has led her to regular collaborations with luxury brands such as Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Dior, all whilst juggling her consultancy and creative work with an intensive 5-6 day per week workout schedule.
This week, we catch up with Savina for her take on fitness, discipline and fashion.
What’s keeping you busy these days?
I'm currently doing strategic consultancy work for start-ups and creative businesses, besides running my social media platforms.
How important is fitness to you?
Growing up, I hated exercising and sports. I was chubby my whole life and had very little self confidence during my formative years.
It was only when I turned 19 and decided that enough was enough. Instead of wallowing in self pity that I'd always be fat, I would do something about it. It was a lot of trial and error, from all kinds of diets to long 10km runs — I tried them all. Over the years, from when I ran my own start-ups at such a young age, fitness was how I instilled discipline, resistance and mental resilience in my daily life and work.
What are your usual workouts? Any activities you particularly enjoy, in and out of the gym/studio?
I do boxing and HIIT classes. I work out 5-6 days a week, alternating between cardio and resistance.
Who is your fitness inspiration?
As cheesy as it sounds, Michelle Obama. She's the epitome of elegance. Driven, intellectual and takes care of herself and people around her. With her, fitness is relatable and attainable. Especially because she's not a supermodel or an actress — she's a real woman, a working mom.
What’s the most outrageous thing you’ve worn?
A full red outfit, from top to toe.
